Cryx move to Abingdon..

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

I’ve moved to Abingdon, in Oxfordshire in the UK to begin work as a scientist. The town has a GREAT wargaming club (all sorts of games not jut GW/PP ones!) And so last night I played a game of warmachine.

No photographs as I didn’t bring out my camera but I took notes. I was using My Deneghra 500pt list (Deneghra, Nightmare, Cankerworm, Deathripper, 6 Bile thralls, Withershadow, Gorman, Skarlock, Pistol Wraith) He had 2 large trolls – stone and mauler I think, a pyre troll and slag troll, an axer and his leader who had the focus/fury feedback type of feat.

It went down like this..

We all moved up, I was cautious with death tracker on the nightmare so as not to get in charge range of the stone troll. He also moved up.

I charged in the cankerworm to his slag troll and the nightmare to the axer (to get away from the stone troll) I murdered the Axer! Cankerworm with some focus put a hole in the slag troll with help from the skarlock debuffing it. I kept deneghra back and took pot shots with the pistol wraith and the withershadow (who essentailly have the same stats) He charged my nihtmare in the back and totaled it. His slag troll hit the cankerworm but I was lucky to have a box left in each system… CLOSE!

He was getting quite close. A little closer than you want a horde of regenrating frenzied trolls to be. So I oiled the pyre troll to blind it, Denegra used scourge to knock down the mauler and the pistrol wraith got lucky and chilled the stone troll!! Then my bile thralls decided to martyr themselves for the Dragonfather. I did a point of damage to the stone troll, corroding it and the pyre thrall, I did a couple of points and also damaged my own cankerworm corroding it – this knocked out the cortex which meant no focus – was I toast next turn? Then he popped his feat whcih meant anything that got focus got zapped. OWCH.

I survived with most things intact although corrosion burned out my cankerworms cortex – not a big worry as the feat meant that if he had focus then he’d fry and with 2 boxes left he’d be Toast. The skarlock parasited the stone troll who got zapped twice with dark fire and admonia debuffed him by just being there and looking cool. Puppet master on cankerworm from Tremulus made up for lack of focus. I hit with the cankerworm and due to the fleshgrinder, ablation and parasite the stone troll was worm food! Go cankerworm! However now wanting to preseve my beloved beastie I scuttered him behind some trees.

After that it was mostly over. I’d lost my Nightmare and suicided my thralls, my cankerworm was weakened but more or less fully functional and short of the mauler trying to throw the deathripper at deneghra (he missed – phew!) the game was mine. A good game with many hair rasising moments! My opponent did fluff a few rolls but on my second last turn I missed both of Denegrhas spells by 1 which let his mauler get closer than I’d hoped!

I must add that not having much experience of hordes this game was fun. My opponent wasn’t afraid to let his beasts go frenzied and actualy wanted it to happen. He was quite true to the fluff of his army and we played for fun. I enjoyed the game immensely.

Not playing against ‘hordemachine’ or against a casterkill type army allowed us to really have fun rather than work it out ‘chess style’ about how to cheese-ball kill each others HQ which to me seems boring! While I was cautious at the beginning (maybe not in character) I opened up and had to take chances. I would have liked Deneghra to have killed stuff in melee but despite her Uber big spear she’s not a fighter!

Bullet to the Head

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

I had a rather short and anti-climatic game against John on Sunday.

Deployment was thus :

WarmachineA

He had Darius, a squire, a journeyman, 2 centurions and Rowdy.
I had my Deneghra list.

John just turtled and I advanced hoping to outflank, little did I realise that this was some well know tactic called ‘the bullet’.

The turn before the kill was turn 2 and looked like this;
WarmachineB

I did fear a charge on Deneghra so Gorman popped some smoke but I didn’t realise that Darius could life 16 tonnes of steel and put it within 2 inches of him so darius moved, lifted rowdy who then, with the help of a spell charged into Deneghra and ate her. Game over :( it was the worst game I’ve had. John did realise that I wouldn’t know what Darius could do due to my lack of experience so it was a bit of a kick to the teeth. However he was nice about it. I just would have rather had a game rather than I had been target practice as literally no models other than Deneghra died. Not really much of a fight to be fair. I did defiantly learn though, to keep Deneghra WAAAAAAAAAAAY back! It may have been different had I brought Mortenebra as she cannot be knocked down and is also a ‘ ‘Jack-caster’

Withershadow Combine

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

The Withershadow Combine have been finished up and based properly. As with the Cankerworm There may be a revisit to pick out the fine details (rivets etc) but for the moment they are above table-top worthy. I may write
their names on the bases; Admonia, Maelvous and Tremulus incase I forget.
thecombine

Admonia is the female one with the book, she gives the ability Black Arts which allows a spell to be upkept for free! In addition she can unbind enemy spells and protect the general a bit more.
Admonia

Tremulis is the puppeteer, I might add four strings to his puppeting hand. In the game it allows him to have an ability that forces either an enemy or a friendly model to re-roll a dice.
Tremulis

Maelvous is the leader and a little stronger, while he is alive he gives them all Stealth and Shadowbourne, which allows them to use their shadowy powers to walk through terrain and even charge through it!
Maelvous

All three can cast a spell called Dark Fire (each!) which effectively works like the pistol wraith’s pistol with a RAT of 7. However they cannot get an aiming bonus and don’t have the crack shot ability that he does.

In the Circle, the Circle of DEATH!

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

This post is dedicated to Sir Elton John for The Circle of Life song..

Ahem moving swiftly on. This weeks warmachine game was against Ian’s Circle. I think he went a bit soft with his choice of caster a sort of shapeshifting werewolf dude with 2 axes an a lot of fury potential. He also had a Satyr, Stone&Stick-Man,a stone circle, a twigman making monolith, wayfarer and druids.

I took Deneghra, Nightmare, 2 Deathrippers, Nightwretch, Bile Thralls, Gorman, Pistol Wraith and The Withershadow Combine made their Debut.

Deployment was as shown in the picture, Ian allowed me to go first.
Warmachine Deployment

The first turn each was largely uneventful with us moving up into better positions. I didn’t waste as much focus in this game as other games so I am getting better.

The game was largely constrained to a few key moments due to time constraints and also by the fact that in turn 2 both Ian and my own dice rolling was less than dire. (Ian missed a 5+ on three dice and two 7+ on 3 dice twice!) Things didn’t heat up until the Nightmare charged the Satyr and knocked him to 1 wound. Magic was suppressed by the druids and the pistol wraith missed them with both pistols. The Withershadow were interesting but I wasn’t that confident with them as I would be with the nightmare or cankerworm. I only got to zap dark bolt a couple of times at the Stone-Stick-Man-Beast thing. By Turn 2 it looked like this :
cWarmachine

In turn three Ian tried to assassinate deneghra in a long shot by using the wayfarers ability combined with his casters spell to move right on top of Deneghra. He did some damage and combined with the shooting from the evil eye orb thing she have only a couple of wounds left. Stickman fell short as he threw a boneripper but it hit the Eyeball. At this point i felt victory was within my grasp and I popped deneghras feat and combined it with parasite. so that the caster had -2 def and -5 armour and deneghra had +1 armour. The eyeball missed it free shot and deneghra stabbed the warcaster with 3 of her remaining focus but this was transferred to stickman. He was now impailed and easier to hit but again this was transferred. He was vunerable and I couldn’t leave deneghra there so she walked away ( I LOVE WITCH BARBS!) leaving the battle field looking like this:

dWarmachine

I thought about using my withershadow to melee him and hopefully kill him but I coudn’t charge from the wood. Then I noticed my bile thralls who had only done a point of damage on the eyeball and lost a guy. Usually they are dead by now! I decided that since there was so much room just walk down and purge all 5 onto the Warlock and so it was victory to me as he wasn’t going to survive 10d6-5 damage :-)

Flu Induced Painting (FLIP)

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I decided to try and pass the time with some painting. The nightmare got a bit of a touch up and at present has one arm. Presently he will have both. Below is a WIP photo of him and the little greenstuff ‘squiggle’ which grips the central cylinder. The rods/pins in the arms go into this then to help support them in addition to the glue. It should essentially provide another way of distributing the weight of the arms.
Nightmares Spine

I also progressed the Withershadow Combine a little – added the teal/turquoise to the robes, drybrushed and inked the metal and added the brass details. I am going to have to write their names on the bases as each one has different rules.

Withershadow 1

Withershadow 2

Withershadow 3

Finally I cracked out the Hordes and began assembling the Carniverean. He’s had quite a lot of mould release powder on him some of which lead to a slight discolouration but after his bath it will be irrelevant! His torso got pinned to the abdomen and greenstuff helped there. Two shallow but broader than normal holes were bored in the tail and the adjoining part and a small ball of greenstuff used to provide additional strength there. Finally the gaps between the underneath plates on the tail and abdomen were greenstuffed and textured to blend it all together.

Caniveran

He still needs filing on some mould lines as you can see and there was a lot of flash – probably why it was on fleabay in the first place. Still a starter box for the price of the Carniverean alone cannot be too bad!

Mortenebra Has Legs!

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Mortenebra has legs. Its all I got done today as I am recovering from two of the best games of Warhammer I’ve had in quite a while. In addition I couldn’t stick the legs before as basically the superglue which I have currently is rubbish and wouldn’t stick it. So I used some 2-part liquid metal which hardens in about 5 minutes. I did the inner two first, then worked out. So now she’s base-coated and assembled fully. I just need to get her painted.

Picture :
Mortenebra With Legs

In addition the Legion of Everblight box arrived today. I’m thinking of what colours to paint them. I’m toying with the idea of a bit of purple in places but I dont know how that will work out as purple usually looks hideous in large amounts so I am unsure. I know they live in a tundra type area so that will be a factor but I want to shy away from the ‘given’ colour scheme yet not be too distinct. My Cryx are ‘black’ but various things have puple and turquoise on them to tie them together. Tomorrow I need to work on my Withershadow Combine and Nightmare as If I take anything it will be Warmachine/Hordes as that is what is played in the gaming club near where I’m moving to.

I’ve been assembling some Warhammer stuff which *has* to get painted before I even go near the legion of everblight. (unless it doesn’t get painted and then I paint the legion in the UK but hopefully it wont come to that!) Irregardless they may get filed/assembled/primed (in white) but otherwise I have to do, in order of priority ;

For Lizardmen:
Ancient Stegadon + crew to prime and paint
Slann to finish (basing detail)
20 Temple Guard to assemble prime and paint
Terradons – 1 to paint, 1 to repair
Stegadon + crew to fix up & paint
Battle Standard Bearer*
16 Skinks + 2 Kroxigor (unit)*

For Wood Elves:
Battle Standard Bearer
3 Warhawks & Riders
Treeman to finish
Lord on Great Stag (needs a bit of conversion too)*

*not big priorities

Tyranids:
Various units need repairs, possibly some gaunts.. maybe it is all painted but I’m not sure as I haven’t dug them out in about 3 years. Necrons are all painted although some need a bit of fixing up but I wont be using them.

I want to sell my dark eldar and salamander space marines (€75 euros each I think which is insane but I want riid of them) if possible so then I will have 2 armies for each system. I do have a lot of skull pass goblins but that is a long term project so I’m not counting that as there’s waaay too much in it – 2×20 archers 2×30 spearmen, characters, 2 trolls, I need fanatics and to convert some squigs, build some bolt throwers and a doom diver and then that’s about 1500-200- points of wackyness!

Mudered (by) Menoth

Monday, February 16th, 2009

This week I played Tim with his Menoth force of fiery doom. We had two games and I won the first and lost the second.

Game 1
I was using Deneghra, Nightmare, 2 Deathrippers, Pistol Wraith, Gorman DiWolfe and a Skarlock
Tim had Ferora, 2 solos, knights exemplar and zealots. From the picture below you can see the setup.

Game 1 After turn 1
Game 1 Menoth

In brief:
The Pistol Wraith wounded the solo Paladin but didn’t kill him, the Nightmare threw him at Ferora but fell short. Tim advanced his army and made the zealots invincible which was tactically interesting! Ferora came up close set everything on fire and I was in trouble with zealots ontop of Deneghra, Gorman and a Deathripper. I venomed the row of Zealots and then moved (witch barbs = no free strikes !) towards ferora and stabbed her. Twice. Unfortunatley she had two wounds left so I moved the Nightmare through a wall of fire and he crunched her. I did get lucky on a lot of dice rolls and I think Tim exposed his caster.

Game 2

This time around I had as above but swapped out the nightmare for a cankerworm and some bile thralls.
Tim took Kreoss instead of Ferora. And lo did Menoth decree that the infidel be smoten! I got murdered

Game 2 Menoth

This is after my first turn.

In brief:
The Skarlock venomed some people, the Cankerworm charged, attacked and scuttered away. The pistol wraith managed to maneouver and snipe the solo Sensechal but got eaten by Exemplar in return. However once Kreoss got close his feat knocked them all down and I got fire bombed and smashed to bits. It was interesting when Deneghra used her feat, The Withering in combo with Dark Seduction and I seduced his Zealots. I tired to fire bomb Kreoss but to no avail – I should have charged them but live and learn! With time up and with me only having Deneghra, Gorman and a Cankerworm the game was Tims (though Ian maintains I could have won… ^.<) This game was tougher and decisions were harder to make but I think its safe to say we both had good fun !

Learning Points:

  • Menoth are evil!
  • Hit and run with Cankerworm seems to work against infantry.
  • I need more fodder – Mechanithralls perhaps?
  • Pistol Wraiths are still to be called ‘Dirty Harrys

Happiest with: Deneghra – Although fragile she managed to stab Ferora twice and almost kill her. In addition I think I used her quite well and I think my focus allocation was spot on.

Disappointed with
: – My use of Dark Seduction; I didn’t take advantage of it as much as I could have but live and learn! (Or with Cryx die and learn – its all the same =p )

Will remember: Kreoss’ feat – The 14″ AOE knockdown is nasty!

Thanks again to Tim for some good games :-)

Killing Haley in bullet time….

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Firstly the weather was bad so Tim was probably stuck in Meath somewhere but luckily John was on hand to play a couple of games.

Game 1
I was using Deneghra, Nightmare, 2 Deathrippers, Pistol Wraith, Gorman DiWolfe and a Skarlock (well it was a Deryliss miniature but he’s a bit confused about his feelings for Mortenebra at the moment!) It went well and the stealth kept the long gunners from perforating me. The stealth factor is tempting me towards bane thralls although I like the bane knight miniatures better…. decisions decisions..

John was using Haley, her special lancer (Thorn) Long-gunners, gun mage, squire for Haley and journeyman warcaster.

This is my deployment (something I’m not sure if I need to work on) and you can also see the terrain setup, Johns army and a bit of what looks like John!
game1a

In brief it went like this; most things moved up, stealth keeps me alive and the game breaker came when Gorman black oils Haley + crowd of long gunners, pistol wraith goes Dirty Harry on her gunked ass knocking her down to two life [Didn't get Death Chill though] and then I was reminded about Deneghras feat. Because I’m an über noob and I never think to use the feat it was considered a win (cheers John!) as it should have been what was done when going for the kill. As an aside Pistol wraiths are EVIL. I’m also getting better at assigning focus. :D

Here is just before Gorman spells inky death on Haley ! FIRE IN THE HOLE !! Both bonejacks got riddled and are inactive. His lancer was knocked down and had crippling grasp on it
game1b

Game 2 -
I was using Deneghra, Cankerworm, 2 Deathrippers, Pistol Wraith, Gorman DiWolfe, Bile Thralls and a Skarlock.
John was using Siege, lancer, squire, journeyman warcaster, reinholt, long-gunners as shown here :
game2

This picture is of deployment ;
game2b

Cankerworm nibbles a corroded lancer. Things move up and bile thralls get popped by gunners. Pistol wraith takes out the lightening wizard 1, and the death ripper channeled venom into the other one. (in discriminate lightening against my stealth – I think not!) My mistake was moving Deneghra up to try to finish the lancer which I fluffed totally. Then John won by moving it out of combat though then the Cankerworm managed to eat it so it was still giving Deneghra cover. Siege de-stealths Cankerworm (who is shielding Deneghra) and Deneghra, drops said worm and wreaked Lancer into a fox hole, pops his can-opener feat and rockets Deneghra in the face – twice! (due to Reinhold reloading his rocket launcher – blasted goblin!) Boosted damage rolls meant that Deneghra was now a small splat on the dirt! I should have put the Cankerworm into melee with the gunners earlier on but I didn’t realise how beneficial it would be. I also exposed Deneghra a bit too much for her own good. I made a mistake and John with the most experience knew how to exploit it. That’s what I’ve found about warmachine – in some ways its like chess – its about waiting for an opening and exploiting it to the maximum rather than barreling into a guy.

Learning Points:

  • Dont rush arc node chickens up as quickly only send one at a time.
  • Remember the feat!
  • Don’t expose the Warcaster.
  • Pistol wraiths are now to be called ‘Dirty Harrys’
  • I need hard hitters, Cankerworm isn’t a hard hitter. He chews things but is not enough on his own.

Happiest with: Dirty Harry (aka the Pistol Wraith) – he essentially murdered Haley and also a lightening wizard in game 2. He capped a gunmage captain in game 1 giving him a bonus damage dice which helped with plugging Hailey. Against these guy’s you only gotta ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ :D

Disappointed with: – Bone Chicken pumped with 3 focus charging ready eat the journeyman warcaster and fluffed his attacks.. needed 8 on 3 dice to kill him but only managed to do 1 wound !! Had I killed him I could have channeled through him in Seige but I got greedy I suppose! Then again its a bone chicken, doing something other than channeling a spell is probably outside its reasons for existing!

Will remember: Haley and her bullet time spell (temporal barrier). It really slowed down the pace of the game which is of course a big bonus to the shooty cygnar! The B%&€* !! Also her dispelling spear means that upkeep spells can be nullified.
Siege’s rockets in the face (x2) I’ve encountered before during a learning game so I wasn’t to fazed by it!

Touching up

Friday, February 6th, 2009

This is a mid painting session update.

Have finished Gorman DiWolfe – a few highlights and some little detailing and he was finished.
diwolfe

The cankerworm is a bit more passable. Still room for improvement but he will do for the moment as there are other things that need painting
cankerworm

Deryliss has had his metallics done and his skin updated. He still needs tidying and detailing.
dery

Finally Deneghra got he skin drybrushed a little – looking at the properly lit photograph she needs a bit more in some places and I tidied up her skirt thing a little. I am also using blue and turquoise in some places to tie certain units together.

denny

Anyway I’m hypoglycemic (necrotite in the engine is running out in warmachine parlance) so I’d better finish up her :D

Pistol Wraith & Gorman (+ BETTER PIX!)

Friday, February 6th, 2009

I got the Pistol Wraith and Gorman almost done. I had to do the wraith at home as the senior speed painting didn’t happen at the club :( The wraith was mostly a quick drybrush up, some light inking and more drybrushing with some slight detailing (the silver on the guns). The reason the skull was brown was because bone looks better over brown. I also tend to use bleached bone rather than white to make my first highlight and then possibly white and that to make the final one depending. The bleached bone is more muted and not as garish as white can sometimes tend to seem. Eitherway he was mostly done and just needed the green scarves to be inked green, then highlighted up with goblin green+bleached bone and finally a hint of scorpion green so he’s a little bit ethereal looking!

feelingluckypunk
Feeling Lucky Punk ?

Gorman & Wraith

Gorman DiWolfe was a bit more time intensive as I wanted to make his boots, hood/mask and gloves look like rubber (what a chemist at the time would use to stop himself getting chemical burns) so I mixed black with clear varnish. It gives it a different texture than pure matt black. His trim was lined grey and the white chemical bottles were painted goblin green+green ink+ardcoat. The ardcoat thickens the paint so it can be given more texture hence the slightly swirling appearance to his acid bombs. He still needs to be highlighted but seems alright so far.

DiWolfe

The Cankerworm face, spine and jaws were painted in bone like the Pistol Wraith’s head and arms. I was kind of stuck what colours to paint him… but i decided to make the underbelly from brass as Cankerworms are rare bonejacks so it stands to reason that no expense would be spared in manufacturing one. I make my brassy bits from chainmail + shining gold (the new version is the worst metallic EVAR!) and then when its dry some brown ink. (also lack of inks… they are all washes now :( )The legs were also picked out in flat chainmail. I drybrushed the other plates on his top/back with chainmail to pick out the rivets. At the moment he looks passable for a game but is nowhere near finished. The base also got some minor additions like picking out the chain and also making the skull look more skull like !

Cankey

I also worked on Deryliss who got undercoated yesterday along with the Nightmare and Mortenebra. He got a camogreen+codex grey base coat on his robes that was later inked. His skin was bleached bone + beastial brown+a dot of brown ink. This was then inked brown. The metallic parts were drybrushed with chainmail and a drop of green ink to tie him visually to mortenebra.

Hello

Mortenebra only got the most basic of base coats. The chainmail + green ink drybrush as well as some necron abyss foundation mixed with a little grey for her ‘skirt’. some of the bone/fangs were picked out in a little brown but she needs a lot of attention. I still have to affix parts of her.
Morty

Finally… let me introduce the WIP of Warwitch Deneghra :

Deneghra WIP

As you will notice Deneghra has a nicer poke-ier stabbier spear as her default one is totally pathetic! She needed an über spear which came from Morathai’s corpse. (Don’t ask why I had spare Morathai body lying about) the spirals were green-stuffed to blend in and painted the nice green basecoat of scorpion green. I started on Deneghra’s skin which was grey+liche purple then it was highlighted grey + brown to inject some life into it. It gives it this dusky appearance. Elf flesh and grey leads it to where it is now but it needs a final highlight of elf flesh alone I think.

Tomorrow I might try and get Deneghra finished for my game against Tim on Sunday. I’m expecting to be murdered but I remember when getting to grips with my Lizardman army I would always be looking to learn from a game weather I win or loose and I think I am picking up ideas. I will need to get more infantry like has been suggested. Mechanithralls were suggesed and Bane knights/thralls. The Bane Knights look a bit cooler although game wise I have no idea. Bane thralls and mechanithralls are listed in the book so I will re-read them.
