I had a rather short and anti-climatic game against John on Sunday.
Deployment was thus :

He had Darius, a squire, a journeyman, 2 centurions and Rowdy.
I had my Deneghra list.
John just turtled and I advanced hoping to outflank, little did I realise that this was some well know tactic called ‘the bullet’.
The turn before the kill was turn 2 and looked like this;

I did fear a charge on Deneghra so Gorman popped some smoke but I didn’t realise that Darius could life 16 tonnes of steel and put it within 2 inches of him so darius moved, lifted rowdy who then, with the help of a spell charged into Deneghra and ate her. Game over
it was the worst game I’ve had. John did realise that I wouldn’t know what Darius could do due to my lack of experience so it was a bit of a kick to the teeth. However he was nice about it. I just would have rather had a game rather than I had been target practice as literally no models other than Deneghra died. Not really much of a fight to be fair. I did defiantly learn though, to keep Deneghra WAAAAAAAAAAAY back! It may have been different had I brought Mortenebra as she cannot be knocked down and is also a ‘ ‘Jack-caster’

This post is dedicated to Sir Elton John for The Circle of Life song..
Ahem moving swiftly on. This weeks warmachine game was against Ian’s Circle. I think he went a bit soft with his choice of caster a sort of shapeshifting werewolf dude with 2 axes an a lot of fury potential. He also had a Satyr, Stone&Stick-Man,a stone circle, a twigman making monolith, wayfarer and druids.
I took Deneghra, Nightmare, 2 Deathrippers, Nightwretch, Bile Thralls, Gorman, Pistol Wraith and The Withershadow Combine made their Debut.
Deployment was as shown in the picture, Ian allowed me to go first.

The first turn each was largely uneventful with us moving up into better positions. I didn’t waste as much focus in this game as other games so I am getting better.
The game was largely constrained to a few key moments due to time constraints and also by the fact that in turn 2 both Ian and my own dice rolling was less than dire. (Ian missed a 5+ on three dice and two 7+ on 3 dice twice!) Things didn’t heat up until the Nightmare charged the Satyr and knocked him to 1 wound. Magic was suppressed by the druids and the pistol wraith missed them with both pistols. The Withershadow were interesting but I wasn’t that confident with them as I would be with the nightmare or cankerworm. I only got to zap dark bolt a couple of times at the Stone-Stick-Man-Beast thing. By Turn 2 it looked like this :

In turn three Ian tried to assassinate deneghra in a long shot by using the wayfarers ability combined with his casters spell to move right on top of Deneghra. He did some damage and combined with the shooting from the evil eye orb thing she have only a couple of wounds left. Stickman fell short as he threw a boneripper but it hit the Eyeball. At this point i felt victory was within my grasp and I popped deneghras feat and combined it with parasite. so that the caster had -2 def and -5 armour and deneghra had +1 armour. The eyeball missed it free shot and deneghra stabbed the warcaster with 3 of her remaining focus but this was transferred to stickman. He was now impailed and easier to hit but again this was transferred. He was vunerable and I couldn’t leave deneghra there so she walked away ( I LOVE WITCH BARBS!) leaving the battle field looking like this:

I thought about using my withershadow to melee him and hopefully kill him but I coudn’t charge from the wood. Then I noticed my bile thralls who had only done a point of damage on the eyeball and lost a guy. Usually they are dead by now! I decided that since there was so much room just walk down and purge all 5 onto the Warlock and so it was victory to me as he wasn’t going to survive 10d6-5 damage

This week I played Tim with his Menoth force of fiery doom. We had two games and I won the first and lost the second.
Game 1
I was using Deneghra, Nightmare, 2 Deathrippers, Pistol Wraith, Gorman DiWolfe and a Skarlock
Tim had Ferora, 2 solos, knights exemplar and zealots. From the picture below you can see the setup.
Game 1 After turn 1

In brief:
The Pistol Wraith wounded the solo Paladin but didn’t kill him, the Nightmare threw him at Ferora but fell short. Tim advanced his army and made the zealots invincible which was tactically interesting! Ferora came up close set everything on fire and I was in trouble with zealots ontop of Deneghra, Gorman and a Deathripper. I venomed the row of Zealots and then moved (witch barbs = no free strikes !) towards ferora and stabbed her. Twice. Unfortunatley she had two wounds left so I moved the Nightmare through a wall of fire and he crunched her. I did get lucky on a lot of dice rolls and I think Tim exposed his caster.
Game 2
This time around I had as above but swapped out the nightmare for a cankerworm and some bile thralls.
Tim took Kreoss instead of Ferora. And lo did Menoth decree that the infidel be smoten! I got murdered

This is after my first turn.
In brief:
The Skarlock venomed some people, the Cankerworm charged, attacked and scuttered away. The pistol wraith managed to maneouver and snipe the solo Sensechal but got eaten by Exemplar in return. However once Kreoss got close his feat knocked them all down and I got fire bombed and smashed to bits. It was interesting when Deneghra used her feat, The Withering in combo with Dark Seduction and I seduced his Zealots. I tired to fire bomb Kreoss but to no avail – I should have charged them but live and learn! With time up and with me only having Deneghra, Gorman and a Cankerworm the game was Tims (though Ian maintains I could have won… ^.<) This game was tougher and decisions were harder to make but I think its safe to say we both had good fun !
Learning Points:
- Menoth are evil!
- Hit and run with Cankerworm seems to work against infantry.
- I need more fodder – Mechanithralls perhaps?
- Pistol Wraiths are still to be called ‘Dirty Harrys
Happiest with: Deneghra – Although fragile she managed to stab Ferora twice and almost kill her. In addition I think I used her quite well and I think my focus allocation was spot on.
Disappointed with: – My use of Dark Seduction; I didn’t take advantage of it as much as I could have but live and learn! (Or with Cryx die and learn – its all the same =p )
Will remember: Kreoss’ feat – The 14″ AOE knockdown is nasty!
Thanks again to Tim for some good games

This is a mid painting session update.
Have finished Gorman DiWolfe – a few highlights and some little detailing and he was finished.

The cankerworm is a bit more passable. Still room for improvement but he will do for the moment as there are other things that need painting

Deryliss has had his metallics done and his skin updated. He still needs tidying and detailing.

Finally Deneghra got he skin drybrushed a little – looking at the properly lit photograph she needs a bit more in some places and I tidied up her skirt thing a little. I am also using blue and turquoise in some places to tie certain units together.

Anyway I’m hypoglycemic (necrotite in the engine is running out in warmachine parlance) so I’d better finish up her

I got the Pistol Wraith and Gorman almost done. I had to do the wraith at home as the senior speed painting didn’t happen at the club
The wraith was mostly a quick drybrush up, some light inking and more drybrushing with some slight detailing (the silver on the guns). The reason the skull was brown was because bone looks better over brown. I also tend to use bleached bone rather than white to make my first highlight and then possibly white and that to make the final one depending. The bleached bone is more muted and not as garish as white can sometimes tend to seem. Eitherway he was mostly done and just needed the green scarves to be inked green, then highlighted up with goblin green+bleached bone and finally a hint of scorpion green so he’s a little bit ethereal looking!

Feeling Lucky Punk ?

Gorman DiWolfe was a bit more time intensive as I wanted to make his boots, hood/mask and gloves look like rubber (what a chemist at the time would use to stop himself getting chemical burns) so I mixed black with clear varnish. It gives it a different texture than pure matt black. His trim was lined grey and the white chemical bottles were painted goblin green+green ink+ardcoat. The ardcoat thickens the paint so it can be given more texture hence the slightly swirling appearance to his acid bombs. He still needs to be highlighted but seems alright so far.

The Cankerworm face, spine and jaws were painted in bone like the Pistol Wraith’s head and arms. I was kind of stuck what colours to paint him… but i decided to make the underbelly from brass as Cankerworms are rare bonejacks so it stands to reason that no expense would be spared in manufacturing one. I make my brassy bits from chainmail + shining gold (the new version is the worst metallic EVAR!) and then when its dry some brown ink. (also lack of inks… they are all washes now
)The legs were also picked out in flat chainmail. I drybrushed the other plates on his top/back with chainmail to pick out the rivets. At the moment he looks passable for a game but is nowhere near finished. The base also got some minor additions like picking out the chain and also making the skull look more skull like !

I also worked on Deryliss who got undercoated yesterday along with the Nightmare and Mortenebra. He got a camogreen+codex grey base coat on his robes that was later inked. His skin was bleached bone + beastial brown+a dot of brown ink. This was then inked brown. The metallic parts were drybrushed with chainmail and a drop of green ink to tie him visually to mortenebra.

Mortenebra only got the most basic of base coats. The chainmail + green ink drybrush as well as some necron abyss foundation mixed with a little grey for her ‘skirt’. some of the bone/fangs were picked out in a little brown but she needs a lot of attention. I still have to affix parts of her.

Finally… let me introduce the WIP of Warwitch Deneghra :

As you will notice Deneghra has a nicer poke-ier stabbier spear as her default one is totally pathetic! She needed an über spear which came from Morathai’s corpse. (Don’t ask why I had spare Morathai body lying about) the spirals were green-stuffed to blend in and painted the nice green basecoat of scorpion green. I started on Deneghra’s skin which was grey+liche purple then it was highlighted grey + brown to inject some life into it. It gives it this dusky appearance. Elf flesh and grey leads it to where it is now but it needs a final highlight of elf flesh alone I think.
Tomorrow I might try and get Deneghra finished for my game against Tim on Sunday. I’m expecting to be murdered but I remember when getting to grips with my Lizardman army I would always be looking to learn from a game weather I win or loose and I think I am picking up ideas. I will need to get more infantry like has been suggested. Mechanithralls were suggesed and Bane knights/thralls. The Bane Knights look a bit cooler although game wise I have no idea. Bane thralls and mechanithralls are listed in the book so I will re-read them.
